****We have a limited spaces left for August 2023 enrollment***** If interested, send an inquiry through our website or email to theurbantoddler@yahoo.com.
Our program is an outdoor art, music, and yoga program located in the heart of North Park. Our facility has a mini farm including a therapy dog Osito, free roam bunnies, Miss Owl the cat and our flock of chickens.
Our enrichment program is similar to a camp since we do not require contracts or prorated tuition. Once you have a space in our program, it is yours until you forfeit the space (See our tuition section for more details on pricing and tuition structure).
Our curriculum incorporates a mixture of art and nature in a way that promotes children’s discovery and increases learning opportunities. Through our various projects, our children learn about the world around them while also developing their motor skills.
We have a staff of 2 credentialed teachers including the owner with a maximum of 12 children. We look for qualified teachers who have their BS in Child Development, are in a Master's or Ph.D. program, and looking for classroom experience during their pursuit of higher education.
Our teachers do move on into their long-term careers eventually but during their higher education pursuit, we benefit from their wide array of formal education and experience.
We have a limited amount of spaces remaining for August 2023 enrollment. Contact us via email at theurbantoddler@yahoo.com or through our website contact page.
After an 18-year career in business management, I returned to college to obtain my early childhood teaching credentials to bring an outdoor nature based program to our community. Growing up in New Hampshire, our education always included being outside even in the snow. There is a great lack of outdoor programs here in San Diego yet we have the mildest climate in the country. Finding a program that was outside and included animals was my priority for what I wanted to give my daughter.
After not finding what I was looking for, I decided the only way to really obtain a well rounded program that features everything that made my own childhood so special was to create it myself. I consulted with credentialed teachers, spent time volunteering in special education classroom and consulted with a Child Psychologist to ensure this program is the very best our community offers.
Julie, the owner, and founder of the Urban Toddler was inspired to create the program after her journey trying to identify why her son only spoke a few words at the age of 3. After extensive research, she learned that the San Diego Unified School District provided free assessments. She decided to have her son assessed, and he was quickly diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As a parent, it is not easy to hear that your child needs special education, but Julie would like to let parents know that acceptance for services, especially at the recommendation of doctors, teachers, and even friends makes all the difference.
Julie embraces her son’s diagnosis and celebrates all his achievements. Her son is now 11 years old, thriving in school, surfs, skateboards, does BMX racing, and is a skilled Minecraft player. He has lots of friends, is an amazing storyteller, and has a very snarky sense of humor. Julie’s son shared with her that he remembers not being able to talk, and how he felt stuck. But, he also remembers his teachers and specialists along the way making a positive impact on his outlook on school.
After seeing her sons’ amazing leaps and bounds through special education, Julie decided to return to college and obtain her early childhood teaching credential, and her children’s yoga certification to start her own program for her daughter. Her daughter is now 8 years old and loves to be involved with the preschool.
We are a California Licensed Daycare operating as an enrichment program. We offer a flexible program for those parents interested in a part-time with an option to continue month to month. You can select the day(s) of enrollment. Unlike most programs that require part-time enrollment to be on M/W/F or T/TH, we allow enrollment on any days we have available. We do require 2 days of enrollment so they benefit from our program.
Most programs have a prorated tuition to cover closures over holidays which usually account for 30-45 days/year. Our tuition is based on the number of days in the month minus any days we choose to close the school, tuition is due on the 15th of the previous month and we don't ask for deposits for notice. We include all organic locally purchased farm-to-table lunches, all craft project materials and we have a staff of 2 teachers with a maximum of 12 children.
There is a one time enrollment fee of $250. | Program Tuition: $70/day 9am to 1:00pm
If you have questions about our program or our wait list, feel free to send us a message. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
